UMass Music & Dance to Present Guest Artist Concerts in October
AMHERST (MA) – This month, the University of Massachusetts Department of Music and Dance hosts three events featuring talented guest performers in a variety of musical styles. All three performances are free and open to the public.
On Monday, October 16 at 7:30 p.m., Michael Wayne, Boston Symphony Orchestra clarinetist, presents a combination performance and masterclass, followed by a Q & A session. Wayne, who is also a faculty member at the New England Conservatory and the Tanglewood Music Center, will perform Miklos Rozsa’s Sonatina for Clarinet, Op. 27 before working with UMass wind students and answering questions from the audience.
On Friday, October 27 at 8:00 p.m. saxophonist Nathan Jorgensen and percussionist Aaron Ragsdale present a dual performance featuring Astor Piazzolla’s Histoire du Tango and Halim El-Dabh’s A Miraculous Tale, both of which appear on the duo’s recent release by Centaur Records. Rounding out the program will be works by John Fitz Rogers, Brian Egan, Steve Danyew, and Steven Snowden.
The following evening, Saturday, October 28 at 7:30 p.m., the duo of Lawler + Fadoul present a program featuring a wide range of works from delightful arrangements of classics to newly written pieces for their unusual instrumentation, and even a few one-act plays. The duo, which consists of flutist Zara Lawler and marimbist Paul J. Fadoul, have brought their unique blend of musical styles and theater to many of the country’s most prestigious venues, including the Kennedy Center, Strathmore, the Cerritos Center, the Kravis Center, Trinity Wall Street, Vermont’s Yellow Barn, and the Tribeca Performing Arts Center.
All three performances take place in Bezanson Recital Hall, located in the UMass Fine Arts Center, 151 Presidents Dr., Amherst, MA. Free and secure parking is available in nearby University lot 71 off Massachusetts Avenue and lot 62 via Thatcher Way or Stockbridge Road. Visit the Fine Arts Center website for more information or refer to the UMass interactive parking map.
