Renowned Trumpeter Brad Goode to Perform with UMass Jazz Students, Faculty
Student Brass Ensembles also to present a “Brass Bash”
AMHERST (MA) – On Wednesday, November 8, the University of Massachusetts Department of Music and Dance welcomes renowned jazz trumpeter Brad Goode for a special free performance with members of the UMass Jazz Ensemble I and jazz faculty members Jeffrey W. Holmes (piano), Shigefumi Tomita (bass), and Thomas Giampietro (drums). The concert takes place at 8:30 p.m. in Fine Arts Center Performance Room 44, located on the lower level of the building’s Music Wing. Those attending the concert should enter the Music Department using the Bezanson Hall entrance (located off North Pleasant St.,) and follow signs downstairs to Room 44.
Hailed by the Chicago Tribune as a “lyrical genius” and a “major catalyst in the revitalization of the Chicago jazz scene,” Goode has toured and recorded with jazz greats like Rosemary Clooney, Von Freeman, Red Rodney, and Eddie Harris. He later led his own combo which was the house band at the famous Green Mill Jazz Club in Chicago. In recent years, Brad has increasingly appeared as a lead trumpeter with many big bands and symphony orchestras. His 15 solo recordings can be heard on the Delmark, Sunlight, SteepleChase, and Origin labels.
On Monday, November 13, the Department also hosts a concert program featuring their Brass and Trombone Choirs (directed by Greg Spiridopoulos), Trumpet Ensemble (Eric Berlin, director), Horn Choir (Joshua Michal, director), and Tuba Quartets (John Bottomley, director). The aptly-named “Brass Bash” includes music by Puccini, Shostakovich, DiLorenzo, Bjork, Crespo, Kazik, and others. The November 13 concert takes place at 7:30 p.m. in Bezanson Recital Hall, and is free and open to the public.
