AMHERST (MASS.) - The American Musicological Society has selected Charles Hsueh as a recipient of the Eileen Southern Travel Fund, which will enable him to attend the national meeting of the AMS from October 31 - November 2, 2019 in Boston.
The society provides this travel assistance to enable promising minority undergraduates and terminal master’s degree candidates to meet representatives of graduate programs in musicology from across the country, connect with future colleagues and mentors, and interact with members of the many interest groups within the Society.
Charles Hsueh is a second-year master’s student studying Music History, with Professor Emiliano Ricciardi as his primary research advisor. His research interests include the German Baroque composers Bach and Handel, the Viennese Classical composers Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven, and the relationship between disability and music. His master’s thesis will be focused on how disability affected music theorist Heinrich Schenker, who nearly went blind due to unattended diabetes.
