UMass Music & Dance Hosts Popular Multiband Pops on Oct. 20
Showcase features over a dozen music and dance ensembles plus
the Minuteman Marching Band.
AMHERST (MA) - Each year, the Multiband Pops Concert attracts a sell-out audience that includes students, parents, faculty, administrators, alumni, community members, and families from around New England and the United States. This year’s Multiband Pops will take place on Friday, October 20, 2017 at 7:30 p.m. in the Fine Arts Center Concert Hall.
Presented by the University of Massachusetts Amherst Department of Music and Dance, the annual event is coordinated by Jeffrey W. Holmes, professor and director of Jazz and African-American Music Studies, and serves as a showcase of the department’s finest wind, brass, choral, percussion, and dance ensembles, including the Minuteman Marching Band.
The flow of the concert is choreographed so that there are no breaks (except intermission), with the various performances taking place in an array of locations from within the Fine Arts Center Concert Hall.
Performing ensembles this year will include the UMass Wind Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble I, University Dancers, UMass Amherst Symphony Orchestra, Percussion Ensemble, Symphony Band, Chapel Jazz Ensemble, Vocal Jazz Ensemble, UMass Marimbas, Trumpet Ensemble, Trombone Choir, Horn Choir, and Sax Duo.
The UMass Minuteman Marching Band, nicknamed the “Pride and Class,” performs on the second half of the concert; as an added treat, the audience will get a preview of the Band’s newly-designed uniforms, which the group will be wearing for the first time at this year’s Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, CA on New Year’s Day.
Tickets for the Multiband Pops concert are $25 general public and $18 for students and seniors, and can be purchased from the Fine Arts Center Box Office at 413-545-2511 or at fineartscenter.com/musicanddance.
