Guest Artist Concert: Feathery Jazz Quartet
Tuesday, March 26 at 7:30 PM, Bezanson Recital Hall, FREE
Guest Artist Concert: Feathery Quartet
Led by saxophonist/composer Lena Bloch (UMass alumna), with Russ Lossing (piano, composition), Cameron Brown (bass) and Billy Mintz (drums).
Feathery Quartet draws its inspiration from diverse musical traditions: 20th and 21st century music, jazz, Middle-Eastern, Jewish, Eastern-European music.
The ensemble will present compositions from its album "Heart Knows" (Fresh Sound, 2017) and some new works.
Includes Bloch's compositions Lateef Suite, Heart Knows, Climbing Rose of Lifta and Esmeh as well as Lossing's Three Treasures and New Home.
Based on free improvisation, Feathery's musical approach consists of blurring the lines between composition and spontaneous invention, between written and improvised sections, resulting in a story-telling continuity, with a sense of mutual trust and freedom. The ensemble's name refers to lightness, flexibility, readiness to drift in new directions - like a feather in the wind.
It can be said that Feathery has achieved a unique sound, in the words of Dan Morganstern: "It is a rare and most pleasant surprise to encounter music that is new and different and find it instantly likable. This is truly musical togetherness, creating a sound all its own."
Downbeat Magazine describes Feathery as "Rippling energy and sublimely weightless interplay."
In 2017 Feathery released its album "Heart Knows" on Fresh Sound Records. The quartet was selected to perform at the showcase at the National Chamber Music Conference (NYC, January 2018). The album received rave reviews in All About Jazz, NYC Jazz Record, Down Beat, Chamber Music Magazine and internationally: Canada, Greece, France, Switzerland, Italy, UK, Belgium, Germany. It was listed among the top 50 (Jazz Links, Germany-Switzerland) and top 100 (NPR Jazz Critics Poll and Tenth Annual International Critics Poll) jazz releases of 2018.
