ALTER/ALTAR

HERTER ART GALLERY is pleased to present ALTER/ALTAR, an exhibition of work by graduate students in the Department of Art at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Making art implies alteration, literally and figuratively, while an altar suggests a place for offering. By altering in the pursuit of offering, these artists work towards various forms of "altars". Through this thematic play on words, this exhibition explores the parallels that exist between their diverse practices, which range from painting, video, sculpture, installation, to performance.

The artists in this exhibition are Taylor French Benoit, Amanda Boggs, Leah Burke, Kristy Childress, Chenda Cope, Kathy Fanelli, Avery Forbes, Althea Keaton, Bibiana Medkova, Kenneth Murphy, Nima Nikakhlagh, Xuan Pham, Emily Tareila, Maggie Wilson, and Chaehee Yoon. Please join us at the opening reception to celebrate these artists and their journeys!

This exhibition was made possible with generous support from the UMass Arts Council and the College of Humanities and Fine Arts. The exhibition and reception are free and open to the public as well as to all Five College students, faculty, and staff. For further questions, please contact the gallery at hertergallery@umass.edu.
