Forever Young
Featuring work by Cynthia Consentino
This exhibition examines portrayals of childhood and youth from the 18th century to the present. Since the dawn of American portraiture, children have been a popular subject for paintings and photographs. Representing children is not only about capturing a likeness, but also about portraying childhood as symbolic of innocence, transition, growth, awakening, mortality, youth, education, and freedom or abandon.

Avital Sagalyn: A Life of Exploration
This exhibition, researched and curated by a team of three UMass Art History students, provides a glimpse into the range of Sagalyn’s work and rich cultural history. Sagalyn and her family fled the Nazi invasion of Belgium in 1940 and settled in New York. She was among few women in the Manhattan art scene of the 1950s. After moving to Amherst in 1968, she helped select the first director of the Fine Arts Center.

20th Annual Mark Roskill Symposium
The 20th annual Mark Roskill Symposium will be held in conjunction with the 50th anniversary of the UMass Art History Graduate Program and ask the question: how does thinking the "global" allow us to position ourselves outside of mainstream art histories and perhaps give us leverage to reconsider those very histories? Alumnae of the UMass Art History Department will join in for a roundtable discussion. Refreshments will be available. This event is free and open to the public.

Fielding: Goldenrod and an Exploration of Connections
Curated by Emily Tariela
Fielding, curated by Emily Tareila (MFA, Studio Arts, 2019) uses the plant Goldenrod (L. solidago) as a lens through which to engage the Natural History Collections and the UMass community. The project looks at both human uses and history of the plant, its local history and current presence in the area, and its significance in the non-human sphere and ecology. Fielding consists of a pop-up exhibition in Morrill Science Center with original artwork and selections from the CNS collection, as well as experiential events around campus, from natural dyeing, to plant identification, to cyanotype photography, and more. This exhibition is an outcome of Tareila’s Graduate Assistantship at the UMCA and a pilot project leading to UMCA’s future collaborations with the UMass science collections.
The Fielding exhibition will open to visitors on five Wednesdays:
September 11, 18, & 25, and October 2 & 9, 10:00 am – 5:00 pm
Opening Reception: Wednesday, September 11, 5:00 – 7:00 pm
144 Morrill Science Center 2 South

Games of Chance
Erika Radich & Rocío Olguín
Erika Radich started drawing as a child. It was her parents' bold aesthetics and joy in "seeing" that nurtured a fascination with the world just as it is. Having always felt a sense of wonder with how things connect, and how beauty, proportion, and composition exist everywhere in the natural world, it is this thread between art and science that inspires and guides all of her work.
Rocío Olguín is a visual artist born in Mexico City, with professional training in Graphic Design. From an early age she developed her painting skills by attending various workshops and art schools, with the San Carlos Academy being her main influence.
