It has been such a pleasure to have the opportunity to gather in person at academic conferences once again. The ARCC-EAAE 2022 International Conference Resilient City: Physical, Social, and Economic Perspectives at the Florida International University in Miami saw an excellent UMass presence. Assistant Professor Rob Williams presented a poster, “Accessory Carbon Units”. Erica DeWitt ('22 M.Arch) and Fey Thurber ('22 BS Arch), members of Assistant Professor Pari Riahi's research group, presented the work of the group in their poster, “Experiencing the Vortex”. Senior Lecturer Erika Zekos presented her paper, “Critical Pedagogy and Public Interest Design: Transforming Architecture Design Education for Social Justice” and Associate Professor Caryn Brause presented her paper (co-researched and written with Associate Professor Carey Clouse), “Spatial Appropriation During the Pandemic: Analysis of Two Parallel Cases”. Brause was also presented with a 2022 ARCC Research Incentive Award.
Williams also presented a paper titled, “Ghost of Borges: The Evolving Role of Scale in Architectural Imagination, Representation, and Building” at the National Conference on the Beginning Design Student (NCBDS) at Ball State University in March.
Carey Clouse presented papers at two conferences: American Association of Geographers (AAG) and Council of Educators in Landscape Architecture (CELA).
